Hiking Treks (Gray)

This trek requires hiking the specified trail over two days, starting at either end and with an overnight camp as defined in its trek guide. This trek is over 16 miles long. Treks may be scheduled after the first week in March through to the start of the November hunting season as defined by the trek calendar established for each year.
  1. The Conventional Hike for many years has been the Highland Recreation Group Camp to Proud Lake Pines Camp Site for an overnight camp and then ending at Kensington Metro Park Group Camp. The units cars would need to be shuttled from Highland to Kensington at some point.

  2. The Highland Loop back. This trek runs up and down several hills and is a good workout for a high adventure crew. The trek starts out the same as the conventional trek above with lunch normally at the "Dog Training" area at Cooley Lake Road, after lunch you may back track returning to your start point at the group camp. On the second day you will hike the five mile loop of the parks "Green Trail" normally in a clockwise direction returning once again to the group camp. (no guide map available for return route)
  3. New for 2011 are two new Gray hikes. These start at either Kensington Metro Park group camp or Proud Lake Pines camp site and hike to and camp at the other camp and return to the start point. The first day is about 11 miles and the second day's return route is about 6 miles. This enables the unit to leave their cars parked and not move them. Units choosing to camp both Friday and Saturday nights can camp both nights in one park, moving the cars to the start/end point on Saturday morning before stepping off.

There is a temperature requirement of a high of 44 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and the overnight temperatures must be below 32. If your crew has plans for a winter trek and the weather does not provide these conditions, you may try to reschedule your trek and hope for better winter weather, or do a hiking trek instead. The trek calendar may be full and rescheduling a winter trek may not be possible.
